Whittier, CA – Whittier High School was placed on lockdown on the morning of April 17, 2026, following reports of a potential security threat. At approximately 10:35 a.m., the Whittier Police Department and the Whittier Union High School District received two separate calls from an unknown individual claiming that bombs and an armed person were on campus. The school, located at 12417 Philadelphia Street, immediately implemented lockdown procedures to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors.

Law enforcement personnel responded swiftly, with Whittier PD officers arriving on campus to secure the area. Bomb-detecting canines and handlers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department assisted in a thorough search of the school grounds and buildings. The investigation found no evidence to support the claims made by the caller, confirming that the threats were false.

Once the campus was deemed safe, normal school operations resumed. The incident has been classified as a swatting—a criminal act where someone makes a hoax call to provoke an emergency response. Whittier PD has filed a criminal report, and the Detective Bureau continues to investigate to identify the individual responsible for this dangerous prank.

During the lockdown, students and staff were kept informed and safe, following established emergency protocols. Authorities emphasized the importance of taking all threats seriously, even if they later prove unfounded.

Community members are reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. Whittier PD can be reached at (562) 567-9240 for tips or information related to the incident.

The Whittier Union High School District and Whittier Police Department expressed gratitude for the patience and cooperation of students, families, and staff during the incident. While thankfully no one was harmed, the situation underscores the need for ongoing vigilance and the importance of emergency preparedness in schools.
